Foxconn Ethical Analysis: In order to run a profitable business, maximize shareholder value, and incorporate an ethical framework, management style is very important. Management includes using a firms resources in order to conduct various tactics to achieve the firms overall strategy. Each tactic carried out within a firm needs to have a ethics framework enforced through management to provide the stakeholders with an effective business developed through conscious and sincere decision making. An ethical management style is one that incorporates community building, respect for one another and instilling the firm’s values into the employees in order to empower them. The workers at Foxconn are honest individuals trying to generate income for their families, although the management team continues to monitor them closely and harass them as if they are being forced to work well. This type of management is destructive to their productivity and also the workers themselves. The pressure and harassment is a major reason for the suicides committed at Foxconn, the management techniques and communication styles play a huge role in the cause of depression, without it those who took their life at Foxconn would still be with their families today. One of methods to connect values and ethics with leadership is through the Amoral leadership theory. Under this theory, leaders are viewed as being capable based on the efficiency in their outcomes, ethics plays no role is determining how effective the leader is.[iii] At Foxconn, the management team can be categorized as being Amoral leaders. They are able to continuously produce high profits accompanied with great production efficiency, thus classifying them as great leaders under the Amoral leadership theory. Introduction: George Kennan says, â€Å"Morality in governmental method, as a matter of conscience and preference on the part of our people – yes.† He goes on to say that morality as a criterion for measuring and comparing the behavior of states is flawed. Morality is a preference, not a requirement to govern in the international anarchic system, Kennan argues. Ethics and justice in the international system are measured by how states satisfy varying moral requirements. These moral requirements are defined by a variety of schools of thought, including: Realists, Morality of States theorists, and Cosmopolitans. Realists may validate some action where morality of state theorists and cosmopolitans are fundamentally opposed. Even among realists, there are some with more extreme positions about mor ality and ethics in international relations. Machiavelli argues that morality can be broken when necessary in order to maintain the state, or perhaps even expand the state. To this end, the prince should be amoral and self-aggrandizing (Beitz, 21). Machiavelli is not justifying unwarranted cruelty, â€Å"The prince should not deviate from what is good, if possible, but be able to do evil if constrained† (Beitz, 21). Buddhism stands as a philosophy and a religion founding itself on the theory of a possible eternal soul. Until awakening is achieved, this eternal soul is locked in the vicious cycle of rebirth (Samsara). According to the Four Noble Truths preached by the Buddha, life is a perpetual suffering caused by desire and attachment, and freedom from suffering is only possible by practicing the Eightfold Path. The World is suffering in a succession of temptations and negative experiences from birth to death. Therefore Buddhism advises on searching to go beyond suffering, and only aspire to rest, nothingness, and liberation, into a final state called Nirvana. Happiness or Nirvana can eventually be achieved in a hereafter, another life, if man abandons any desire or perspective of action within his present life, in order to go past suffering. Buddhism’s teachings are paradoxical in many ways, and even the very definition of Nirvana is not clear. Nirvana is not a place like heaven for Christianity, but rather an eternal state of being. It is the state in which the law of Karma and the rebirth cycle come to an end. Achieving enlightenment also implies to be able to see things as they are.
